If you are keen on sailing and the sea, then Lymington is where to head for. You can also catch a ferry there to the Isle of Wight, for a fascinating day trip. Or why not head off to Beaulieu, and see the National Motor Museum, or Beaulieu Abbey. Bucklers Hard, where Henry VIIIís warships were built, is close by. Exbury gardens are also close, with their magnificent displays of Azaleas and Rhododendrons. Going South west takes you to the coastal town of Christchurch, and the charming seaside resorts of Mudeford, Bournemouth and Highcliffe are only a 15-minute drive, while Wimborne, Salisbury, Winchester and Southampton can all be reached within 45 minutes. There are also several superb gardens, National Trust properties and English Heritage sites close by. Make sure you are here to see the New Forest Show, Romsey Show or the Southampton Boat Show in September. Otherwise there are the traditional pastimes in the New Forest of walking and cycling. The open forest is 200 yards away, at the end of the lane, or you can cycle off from the house along the windy country lanes and old tracks across the heath land or through the woods, avoiding the ponies and cattle! Burley itself is full of interesting little shops tearooms and 3 pubs. |
